The Magic of Music
How Music Works
What is This Thing Called Music?
Mixing science and humor, composer and performer Jim Scott leads experiments in music making to reveal where the magic comes from. Far from a passive lecture, Jim makes an experiential play-space where our understanding will be taken beyond words. In this interactive workshop (yes participation, all volunteer, no forcing) we’ll explore why music is good for us. Together we’ll feel how harmony, melody and rhythm interact to motivate, to bring comfort and to soothe and heal our bodies. With Jim’s entertaining demonstrations and explanations, we’ll get insights into the physics of sound, the organization of vibrations into what we call harmony, and the magic of a rhythmic pulse. From the waveforms to the frequencies and the metaphysics of harmonious sound, we’ll experience how we are affected and how music is everywhere, around us and in us.

“A Vision for the Planet” – A Multimedia Experience by Jim Scott

Mixing powerful songs and striking projected images, “A Vision for the Planet” takes us from grieving to celebration and from protest to motivation to sustain life on our planetary home. Prolific composer, guitarist Jim Scott was awarded an NEA grant to create and present this multimedia concert. Jim’s lyrical melodies and outspoken poetry celebrate what’s beautiful, amazing, and fragile about our Earth. As well as hard reality, the program’s message is one of optimism with many invitations to join in the singing. Facing the urgency of the environmental crisis, this musical and visual experience challenges us to feel, to learn and to act.
