Smartphone Videos for Artists: Market Your Work Online

Date: Sunday, March 8th - 2:00 pm

at the Arts Wayland Gallery
35 Andrew Ave., Wayland MA 01778

Your art deserves to be seen, but static images aren't always enough to capture the texture, scale, or emotion of your work. In this fast-paced, 2-hour workshop, you will learn to use your smartphone to make engaging, tasteful marketing videos.

You will be introduced to filming and editing a short, compelling, 2-minute "mini-documentary" about your artwork and creative process, using only your phone and free editing software. Whether you want to pitch a gallery; get on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook; impress collectors; or build a professional portfolio, this class provides the essential knowledge to get you started.

What You Will Learn About:

  • Hooking the Audience: Learn what art buyers actually want to see (and hear) and how to communicate your process quickly and effectively.
  • The Artist’s Voice: Why your artist journey is so important, and how to give your Artist Statement on-mic or on-camera without feeling awkward, including how to set up comfortable interview locations.
  • Narrative Structure: How to use the "three-act structure" to show your artmaking process—from the blank canvas to the final reveal.
  • Studio Cinematography: Framing, lighting, and texture capture to show your art in its best light without expensive gear.
  • Video Editing 101: An introduction to CapCut free editing software, including how to trim clips, overlay text for context, and add legal, mood-appropriate background music.

*Please note that this course is solely designed for artists, not for musicians or family documentarians. Each of those are separate topics. In this course, Roberto will be covering a lot of the psychology of art marketing within the course, not just the tech of how to make videos on a smartphone.

Requirements:

  • A fully charged smartphone (iPhone or Android) with at least 2 GB of available memory space.
  • The free CapCut app pre-installed.
  • Practice Media: Please bring 2 or 3 short video clips and 2 or 3 high-res photos of your existing artwork on your phone to practice with during class.

YOUR PRE-CLASS CHECKLIST:

1. Prepare Your Device

● Fully Charge: Please arrive with 100% battery and a power cable. Video editing drains power quickly!
● Check Storage: Ensure you have at least 2 GB of free space on your phone so you can save your video exports.

2. Install the App

● Please download and install the free CapCut app before arriving.
● Open the app once to make sure it loads correctly.
● Download here: https://www.capcut.com/

3. Bring Your Art (Crucial!)
We will be editing a real project during class. Please have the following saved in your phone’s camera roll:

● 2 to 3 Video Clips: Short clips (10–30 seconds) of your artwork, you working in your studio, or a gallery setup.
● 2 to 3 Photos: High-resolution images of your finished pieces.
● Note: Please ensure these are assets you are happy to share and work with, rather than personal family photos.

4. Bring Headphones

● Since we will be editing audio and music in a group setting, please bring a pair of headphones or earbuds compatible with your phone.

We are going to cover a lot of ground, and having these items ready will allow you to focus entirely on storytelling and technique. Looking forward to it!
