Protest Calash - Artifact: Calash

Artifact: Calash
This is a tribute to Lydia Maria Child’s calash bonnet. As a suffragist and abolitionist, Child wore her outdated bonnet as a protest - insisting that what was worn was not what mattered but rather the person wearing it. Although this bonnet is made in the style of an 18th century calash, the fabric is covered in many of today’s protest slogans and ties into the continuing tradition of wearing handmade hats in protest such as the pink women’s solidarity and red anti-ice knitted hats worn at protests today.
