The primary Statue of Liberty in Paris, located on Île aux Cygnes, is an 1889 replica created to commemorate the centennial of the French Revolution and to symbolize the enduring friendship between France and the United States. It faces west toward its larger counterpart in New York, which France gifted to the United States in 1886 to mark the American centennial and celebrate their shared democratic ideals. While the New York statue became a global icon, the Paris version roots those same ideals—freedom, enlightenment, and democracy—back in France. It reminds viewers that these values are not owned by one nation but shared. In short, the Paris duplicate isn’t just a copy—it’s a reminder of shared history, mutual ideals, and an enduring transatlantic connection. Today, this symbol of liberty feels more relevant than ever.
