Yellow has often been used to symbolize the nonviolent resistance against attempts to take away our freedoms: the pro-democracy movement of the Philippines (1980s); the Yellow Vest Movement in France (2018); the Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong (2014); the Ukraine Resistance (2022-present); and the No Kings Protests (2025-present) to name a few. The Resistance is about the fight to preserve freedom. It portrays the multitude of people that join in the support of freedom and liberty. This image is printed on archival paper and has a thin black frame.

About Linda DeStefano Brown
The portrait of the Union soldier, George T. Dickey, reveals in his pensive face all the pain, suffering, disease and destruction he endured during the battles, won or lost, of the Civil War. The fire in the background could symbolize the disease that ran rampant killing hundreds of thousands or the destruction that is created in the wake of war. There is no glory in the wars that are made necessary to defend liberty and democracy. Neither then nor now. My images speak to the resistance that rises up and the destruction that is left behind.
