Where History Takes Root - Artifact: George T. Dickey Portrait
Artifact: George T. Dickey Portrait
“Where History Takes Root” explores the connection between past and present through the image of a soldier standing beneath a great historical tree, its roots holding the memories of those who came before. Embedded within the roots are symbols of sacrifice, identity, and legacy (an American flag, military artifacts, ink, letters, and the seal of Wayland) representing both personal and collective history. The tree itself serves as a witness to time, holding stories of courage, service, and community. The unfinished and less detailed areas of the piece intentionally reflect the reality of the present moment. While the work began as a study of history and remembrance, it also became a reflection of modern life. The constant pull of work, responsibility, and the everyday weight that often leaves little room for stillness or completion. The absence of full depth in some areas mirrors how we experience history now: fragmented, rushed, and often unfinished. In that way, the piece is not only about honoring the past, but also about acknowledging the present and how we continue to carry these roots forward, even imperfectly.
