This work is in the tradition of the Abstract Expressionist movement, in which the subject matter is the painting process itself. Energetic lines and marks, vibrant colors, and exuberant shapes, create a sense of energy and mystery. This way of painting allows me to portray my inner world.

About Paula Steffen
I work in collage, monoprint, acrylic painting, and found-object assemblage. With each series, I start fresh, although my process remains constant. A rush of anticipation as I begin, without always knowing where I am going. My most recent works are abstract. Abstract art is often perplexing and challenging because it requires the viewer to interpret the forms, the lines, the colors. The ultimate effect of a piece, the emotions and insights it evokes, can sometimes be unexpected, even profound.
