About Ed Stein
Ed Stein is an abstract painter, working primarily with acrylic medium. By profession he is a chemist and is a relative newcomer to the art world. Ed works at the intersection of art and science – the process of producing art is the big mystery but science provides a framework for his understanding of how artists’ materials behave. He enjoys the interplay of colors and forms as they unfold on the canvas, and the great surprises that are revealed. True to his science background, Ed likes to experiment with different materials used in conjunction with the acrylic medium, typically with the goal of creating highly textured surfaces. Kandinsky, Hoffman, Richter and Rothko have influenced Ed’s work. He typically paints to the accompaniment of classical music. The richly textured Bach Goldberg Variations, the dreamy quality of Vaughn Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis and the highly energetic Stravinsky Firebird Suite, have all had an impact on Ed’s work. Ed’s work has been exhibited at a variety of galleries and shows including Gallery 529, Acton Open Studios, Artists Corner and Gallery, Parish Center for the Arts (Westford) and the Post Road Art Center (Marlboro). ‘Trafalgar’ won People’s Choice 1st Place at the Post Road Show (2019). Ed was born in the Eschwege DP Camp, American Occupied Zone of Germany in 1947 and came to New York City with his parents in December of that year. Though educated as a chemist, Ed’s real interests are classical music and history. He’s working on a detailed history of his family.
