The esteemed Arts Wayland Berklee Faculty Jazz Series, under the Direction of Neil Olmstead, Berklee College Professor, continues with The Harry Skoler Quintet.

The Berklee Faculty Jazz Series presents the Harry Skoler quintet performing music of Charles Mingus, jazz standards and a few originals. Skoler’s warm and swinging clarinet playing is featured on his latest release Living In Sound: The Music of Charles Mingus which features Christian McBride, Kenny Barron, Johnathan Blake, and Nicholas Payton in an epic tribute to the legendary jazz bassist. Skoler has garnered national and international reviews in JazzTimes, DownBeat, and Jazziz magazines. Harry, a Professor of Woodwinds at Berklee College of Music, will be joined by a stellar cast of Berklee Faculty including trumpeter Phil Grenadier, bassist Barry Smith, pianist Neil Olmstead and drummer Casey Scheuerelle

Clarinetist Harry Skoler’s latest release on Sunnyside Records, “Living In Sound: The Music of Charles Mingus,” features Christian McBride, Kenny Barron, Johnathan Blake, Nicholas Payton, and Jazzmeia Horn in an epic tribute, with arrangements by Ambrose

Akinmusire, Darcy James Argue, and Fabian Almazan. The recording charted in the Top Ten for radio airplay on JazzWeek and North American College & Community Chart, and Skoler was highlighted in features on Charles Mingus in Jazziz and JazzTimes magazines.

Skoler, professor at Berklee College of Music, has garnered national and international reviews, including JazzTimes, DownBeat, and Jazziz, and has authored publications for DownBeat and Vandoren. He has performed nationally and internationally, including at festivals, clubs, concert venues (Blue Note, Scullers, Regattabar, Cape May Jazz Festival), and educational concerts and clinics. Skoler’s 2024 release “Red Brick Hill” is a montage of evocative vignettes, with collaborative artists Joel Ross, Christian Sands, Dezron Douglas, Johnathan Blake, Marquis Hill, and Grégoire Maret. Artist endorsements include Buffet Crampon and Vandoren.


Phil Grenadier: Trumpet, Flugelhorn

Phil is a highly sought-after trumpeter in the Boston area.

He has recorded with Ella Fitzgerald, John Scofield, Kenny Barron, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Chris Potter, Steve Swallow, Bob Moses, Carlos Santana, Ben Monder, and Richie Beirach, among others.

His recordings include "Sweet Transients," "Playful Intentions," "Shimmer," "Shifting Gears,” and “Rigamaroll.” Phil is professor of ensemble at Berklee College of Music.


Neil Olmstead: Piano

Neil is a pianist, composer, author, and educator with expertise in the jazz and classical genres.

He has shared the stage with Teddy Wilson, Adam Makovicz, Dave McKenna, and performed with the Jimmy Giuffre Quartet and the Moody Blues. He has performed at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia, Italy, and lectured and performed at the University of Padua and Conservatorio Statale di Musica Luisa D’Annunzio in Pescara, Italy. His compositions have been recorded by The Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra and the Bratislava Radio and Television Orchestra.

Neil is Professor Emeritus of piano at Berklee College of Music, Boston. 


Casey Scheuerell: Drums

Currently residing in Boston, Casey Scheuerell spent 18 years in the Los Angeles music scene, having recorded and performed with world-class artists Jean-Luc Ponty, Chaka Khan, Gino Vannelli, Dizzy Gillespie, Dusty Springfield, Charly Garcia, Brenda Russell and Robben Ford.  Television work includes “The Merv Griffin Show,” “The Midnight Special,” and numerous jingles.

He is a respected educator, author, clinician and composer.

Casey has written several books: Berklee Jazz Drums and Stickings and Orchestrations for Drum Set (Hal Leonard Publishing) among them. Casey plays Gretsch Drums and is endorsed by the Avedis Zildjian Cymbal Company, Vic Firth Drumsticks, and Remo Belli, Inc.

Casey is in his 32nd year as professor of percussion at Berklee College of Music.


Barry Smith: Bass

Hailing from the UK, Barry Smith has performed with Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Dave Samuels and Pat Metheny. Barry has toured with Woody Herman and the Thundering Herd as well as the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra.

He has recorded with Alfredo Cardim and Lionel Hampton, among others.

Barry has recently retired from an extensive teaching career as professor of bass at Berklee College of Music.
