Join Arts Wayland for an afternoon of vibrant Brazilian jazz as the Berklee College of Music Faculty Jazz Series, under the Direction of Neil Olmstead, Berklee College Professor, welcomes back Fernando Brandão Quartet. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, flutist, composer, and educator Fernando Brandão is a leading specialist in Brazilian music. On his second visit to the Arts Wayland Jazz Series, Brandão and his quartet will explore the colorful sounds of Brazil, including samba, bossa nova, choro, baião, and ijexá, featuring music by Milton Nascimento, Débora Gurgel, Rosa Passos, Nelson Cavaquinho, and Maurício Carrilho alongside Brandão’s original compositions.
Fernando Brandão
Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, flutist, composer, and educator Fernando Brandão is a leading specialist in Brazilian music. Skilled on concert, alto, and bass flutes he combines the rich rhythms of Brazil with contemporary jazz harmony and improvisation. Brandão has performed extensively as a soloist, chamber musician, and bandleader across the U.S. and Brazil. His career highlights include appearances at Boston’s Celebrity Series, the Berklee Performance Center, the Villa-Lobos Festival, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and various New England jazz festivals, alongside prominent Brazilian venues such as Casa do Choro, Sala Cecília Meirelles, and the Teatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro. A highly versatile musician, he spent a decade with Boston’s Emmanuel Music Orchestra and has featured as a soloist with major Brazilian symphony orchestras. Brandão has released seven albums as a leader and contributed to over 40 recordings as a sideman, collaborating with legendary artists including Luciana Souza, Toninho Horta, Rosa Passos, Filó Machado, Chico Pinheiro, Edu Ribeiro, Maria Teresa Madeira, Leandro Braga, Altamiro Carrilho, Leni Andrade, Bruno Råberg, George Garzone, Tim Ray, Greg Hopkins, Jason Palmer, Kris Adams, Sergio Brandão, Teresa Inês, Pablo Ablanedo, Alfredo Cardim, and Lisa Thorson. A Professor at Berklee College of Music since 1996 and a faculty member at Wellesley College, Brandão has spent decades advancing Brazilian music education. He pioneered much of the Brazilian ensemble curriculum and history courses at Berklee and authored the International etude book Brazilian and Afro-Cuban Jazz Conception. As a producer, he has hosted residencies with masters such as Oscar Castro-Neves, Guinga, and Joyce Moreno, while performing alongside guest artists Ivan Lins and Rosa Passos. Brandão's teaching spans the full spectrum of musical theory and practice, directing ensembles across all skill levels and delivering specialized lectures on Brazilian phrasing, harmony, and woodwind techniques at institutions like Boston University, New England Conservatory, Northeastern University, Boston College, and the University of New Mexico. Internationally, he serves as a featured teacher and performer at Brazil Camp, Choro Camp New England, and the International Brazilian Flute Festivals, including major editions in Manaus, Paraty, and throughout Brazil.
Maxim Lubarski is a virtuoso pianist from Odessa, Ukraine, renowned for his stylistic versatility and deep musicality. His repertoire spans classical, jazz, and music of Latin America, showcasing his ability to merge different styles seamlessly. Trained as a classical pianist at the prestigious Stolyarsky School and Odessa State Conservatory, he later discovered his passion for jazz, founding the award-winning group, Art Session. After touring internationally and performing with the Odessa State Symphony, he moved to the U.S. upon receiving a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music, where he studied with Joanne Brackeen, Danilo Pérez, Hal Crook, and Joe Lovano. Lubarsky has performed with artists such as Terri Lyne Carrington, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dave Liebman, Grace Kelly, and Gabrielle Goodman, and leads multiple ensembles including his own quartet and the Latin jazz group TRIAD+. He has performed and taught across Europe, South Africa, China, Japan, and the United States, appearing at festivals such as Cambridge Jazz Festival, Jazz on the Edge Festival (Israel), Black Sea Jazz Weekend (Ukraine), Diacetum Festival (Italy), and the Spoleto Festival (USA), among others. His latest recording, Explorations in Sound, has been recognized as one of the most creative releases of the year. Fernando Huergo is a bassist, composer, and educator, originally from Córdoba, Argentina, now based in Boston. He has recorded over 160 albums, including 11 as a leader and co-leader. Fernando has toured and given clinics throughout North, Central and South America, Europe, and Asia. An active performer on the jazz scene, he currently plays with Guillermo Klein y Los Guachos, Mehmet Sanlikol, Jim Kelly, Fernando Brandao, Jason Yeager, El Eco, Yulia Musayelyan, Pablo Ablanedo Octet, Macuco Quintet, Maxim Lubarsky, Leo Blanco and Dario Acosta Teich among others. He has performed with Luciana Souza, Cesar Camargo Mariano Trio, Danilo Perez, Marta Gómez, Dave Valentín, Hendrick Meurkens, Dave Liebman, Dave Samuels, Joe Beck, and many others. Fernando Huergo has performed with his Quintet at the Buenos Aires Jazz Festival, and Cordoba International Jazz Festival in Argentina, as well as at Alexanderplatz Jazz Club in Rome, Italy, and Sunside Jazz in Paris, France, The Regattabar in Cambridge and in Marblehead, Northborough, Arlington, and Groton Jazz Festivals in Massachusetts, at Blue in Portland, Maine, Bates College in Lewiston, Maine and at The Press Room in Portsmouth, NH, and at Cornelia Street Café, El Taller Latino, Cachaça, Tutuma, Bonafide and Satalla in NYC, among others. In 2010, he received a Grant from Chamber Music of America and the French American Cultural Exchange, which resulted in the recording of the album “Suite in Blue and White”, in Paris, France. Fernando is a professor in the Bass Department at Berklee College of Music, where he has taught since 1996, and an adjunct faculty at Tufts University since 2001 at Northeastern University and in New England Conservatory Preparatory Division, since 2017. He graduated from Berklee College of Music in 1992, and also studied at New England Conservatory. His principal teachers included Charlie Banacos, Jerry Bergonzi, George Garzone, Hal Crook, Cecil McBee, George Russell, Whit Browne, Oscar Stagnaro, and Bruce Gertz, among others.
Gen Yoshimura is a drummer/composer/educator from Japan. He moved to Boston to study at Berklee College of Music (BM) and Longy School of Music at Bard College (MM), and has lived there ever since. Gen is a versatile musician proficient in many genres including a wide array of Latin styles, jazz, fusion, and pop. Throughout his musical career, he has been given opportunities to share the stage with several internationally acclaimed artists including Fernando Huergo, Walter Smith, Kris Davis, John Lockwood, Oscar Stagnaro, Rick Dimuzio, Daniel Ian Smith, Nate Radley, Ernesto Diaz, Manolo Mairena, Gonzalo Grau, Rebecca Cline, Gilson Schachnik, Yulia Musayelyan, Jim Kelly, Fernando Brandao, Maxim Lubarsky, Fabiola Mendez, Eduardo Betancourt, Andy Voelker, Matt Jenson, Doug Olsen, Alexei Tsiganov, Angel Subero, Zahili Zamora, Fryderyk HD, SONMASS, Bruno Raberg Tentet, Allan Chase Quartet, Leo Blanco Trio, La Pura Vida, Santiago Bosch Trio, Pritesh Walia Trio, and many others. A major highlight of his career includes being featured alongside Pat Metheny, Fred Hersch, and Bobby Watson in Jazz Artistry Now (JAN)’s Best of Jazz 2020 for his drumming in Fernando Huergo’s Big Band album "The Possibility of Change”. Unity Until I Arrive A Little Snowman Gen has built an illustrious career as an educator throughout the Boston area. Most notably, he is a faculty at New England Conservatory's Preparatory Program and Continuing Education Program, where he teaches ensembles and private instruction. He has also led clinics and masterclasses for prestigious institutions such as Berklee College of Music in the institution’s 2023 Summer Drum/Percussion Workshop and its 2018 Workshop & Audition Tour in Quito, Ecuador. In addition to his work with his alma mater, Gen has led masterclasses in Groton School, and Lethbridge University. He also has been teaching private lessons regularly for years. Gen’s mentors include many world-renowned artists such as Mark Walker, Kenwood Dennard, Ralph Peterson Jr, Neal Smith, Francisco Mela, Yoron Israel, Marko Djordjevic, Jacques Schwarz-Bart, Phil Grenadier, Tiger Okoshi, and Eric Hofbauer.
