As a young immigrant, I grew up on a metaphorical island, not knowing if the values and traditions I was learning were typically Chinese or specific to my family. Visiting China, for the first time, I found myself surrounded by people who all looked like me, giving me a sense of comfort that I had lost a decade before, when we originally departed Taiwan. That trip and another one later, when I was an adult with children of my own, have left me with a yearning to learn more and share the journey through my paintings.

Oil on Canvas by Kaffee Kang

Size: 24x30

About Kaffee Kang
Before the written language was developed, early humans made cave drawings and ancient Egyptians had hieroglyphics. These civilizations used images to tell the stories of their lives. This use of the visual narrative has continued through the ages, from Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel to Diego Rivera’s murals to Norman Rockwell’s illustrations. It is in this tradition that I pursue my painting practice. I am a visual storyteller. Like writers who weave together characters and plots to create stories, I populate my canvases with multiple figures in varying contexts to compose narrative scenes that resonate with my personal experiences and hopefully yours. I often explore allegorical themes such as gender roles; alienation and belonging; the political divide; and cultural differences. And sometimes, I simply tell stories of friends, family, and strangers. Everyone has a story to tell.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0511/9154/6031/files/2026_November_Crossroads_24x30-BrushandLathe.jpg?v=1793258530
