About Gloria Goguen
Gloria J. Goguen is a visual artist exploring classical forms of botanical art in non-traditional mediums. She chooses subjects and themes which move her emotionally and express the fragility and wonder of flora. To this end, she maintains a perpetual botanical journal - a sketchbook in which she illustrates the seasonality of local subjects which become familiar friends as she visits to watch them grow and age in the ongoing process of their fleeting lifecycle. She follows each subject through the course of its emergence to its last fading show, returning many times to observe and document until it becomes the work in its final form. Gloria enjoys finding new techniques to express her view of nature while extending the traditional botanical practice and form. She utilizes a variety of mediums including colored pencil, pastel, watercolor and sumi ink. Her compositions in vibrant hues evoke tranquil memories of familiar lyrical images and lend a dreamlike quality in which fiction and reality meet. She is inspired by the classical artistry of Dutch Masters as well as other pure botanical studies of plants fruits and vegetables, which often serve as the foundation for more impressionistic renderings in which light and color are captured in their natural environment. In addition to her recent solo exhibition Botanical Dreams at the Hanover Theater in Worcester, Gloria’s work has been exhibited at ArtsWorcester, Arts Wayland and other venues in Massachusetts including the Sprinkler Factory in Worcester, the Fitchburg Art Museum, Attleboro Art Museum and the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, and has also appeared in several publications including Heliotrope: French Heritage Women Create and Lily Poetry Review 2020 (Winter edition). Gloria is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists and the New England Society of Botanical Artists
