Instructor: Mei-Ling Ellerman

If you want to learn to draw portraits of your family and friends, this course is for you. Local artist Mei-Ling Ellerman will introduce figure drawing, with a particular focus on portraits. Students will learn how to draw facial features, how to figure out proportions, and how to draw the subtle nuances of faces from different angles. The course will include: classes on figure drawing, facial features, frontal portraits (self-portrait), profile portraits, ¾ profile portraits, and children’s portraits. Mei-Ling offers support and individualized feedback throughout each class, which will help you hone your ability to accurately observe the drawing subject and improve your own drawings. Students will have the opportunity to draw a portrait of their own choosing, such as of a family member, and can see how far they have come!

Note: This course is for students with some previous experience drawing, or those who have taken the Beginner Learning to Draw for Life course. Please contact Mei-Ling if you have any questions. There is some flexibility in dates if students agree to a make-up session.

I recently took a painting class at The W Gallery and loved it, but realized that learning how to draw should be my next step, so I signed up for Mei-Ling Ellerman's 8-week "Learning to Draw for Life Level I" class at The W Gallery.  Five weeks into the program, I am amazed at how much I have already learned.  Mei-Ling is a wonderful teacher and has taught us how to truly see our subjects in terms of light and dark and transfer those values onto paper.  She has shared her extensive knowledge about different types of paper, pencils and tools, and styles of drawing.  She has expertly guided us though short exercises and longer projects each week.  I am so glad that I took this class and am thrilled with how much I have been able to accomplish in a few weeks.  I can’t wait to take the next course.   Sarah
