Neil’s Trio w/ guest artist Phil Grenadier

Arts Wayland is thrilled to announce the return of our beloved jazz series on October 9th at 3 pm.

The concert series will resume with the band “Neil’s Trio with guest artist Phil Grenadier” in a beautiful new venue, the Weston Arts and Innovation Center (356 Boston Post Road, Weston MA). 

In this new venue, pianist Neil Olmstead is joined by the intuitive bassist Barry Smith and the ever-colorful Casey Scheuerell on drums.

An afternoon of familiar jazz standards will be mixed with artfully abstract solo interplay.

The provocative trumpeter Phil Grenadier will be on hand to move things in untold directions.

Neil Olmstead, Piano
Neil has shared the stage with Teddy Wilson, Adam Makovicz, Sammy Price, Dave McKenna and performed with The Jimmy Giuffre Quartet and The Moody Blues, among others. He has performed at the Umbria Jazz Festival and appeared on National Public Radio. Neil’s compositions have been recorded by The Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra and The Bratislava Radio/Television Orchestra. His duo recording, Colaboraçaõ is with guitarist Scott Free. A classical song cycle, Secrets of Ferns was released in 2019. Neil is author of Solo Jazz Piano, The Linear Approach. He is Professor of Piano at Berklee College of Music, Boston.

Casey Scheuerell, Drums
Casey has performed, recorded, and/or toured with Chaka Khan, Jean-Luc Ponty, Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Dizzy Gillespie, Gino Vannelli, Chick Corea, Melissa Manchester, Abe Laboriel, Victor Wooten, Joe Lovano, record producers Arif Mardin,and David Foster, and television/film composers Michael Kamen and Mason Daring. He is currently Professor of Drums at Berklee College of Music, Boston.



Barry Smith, Bass
Hailing from the UK, Barry Smith has performed with Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Dave Samuels and Pat Metheny. Barry has toured with Woody Herman and the Thundering Herd as well as Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. He has recorded with Alfred Cardim and Lionel Hampton among others. Barry has recently retired from an extensive teaching career as Professor of Bass at Berklee College of Music



Phil Grenadier, Trumpet
Phil is a highly sought after trumpeter in the Boston area. He has recorded with Ella Fitzgerald, John Scofield, Kenny Barron, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Chris Potter, Steve Swallow, Bob Moses, Carlos Santana, Ben Monder, and Richie Beirach among others. His recordings include "Sweet Transients," "Playful Intentions," "Shimmer," "Shifting Gears" and "Rigamaroll".
