Arts Wayland has booked some of the biggest names in the MetroWest music scene for its Friendraiser Party on March 22 ― including several hard-to-schedule artists who are doing Arts Wayland a favor. The evening will begin at 7:30 with By Chance They Met. Expect many highlights, including Brent Clark’s romantically urgent, honey-and-grit voice, the McKinnon sisters’ lush arrangements and under-your-skin harmonies, the deft guitar phrasing of Brice Buchanan, the bell-like timbre and emotional wallop of Kat Brooks’ voice, and the precise-yet-fluid interplay of Ben Rice, Scott Lilliot, and Bernie Geddry on electric guitar, bass, and drums. Their lilt is magical and contagious.

At the beginning of the second set, starting about 9 o’clock, look around the room. It is fun to watch people’s faces the first time they hear Joe Oneschuk on trumpet. The sound can be bold and frolicking, as you’d expect, and later delicate and nuanced with buttery ligatures not anticipated from brass. Enter Leslie Welch on flute. Her dialogues with Joe yield rich soundscapes that feel sunny and irresistible. Bob Cramer elicits a masterful command of the guitar, with elegant, understated riffs that lift your senses and reveal the blues imperative. The much admired combo of Hartley Waggener and Rusty Williams on bass and drums lay down seductive, can’t-stand-still grooves that will make you want to slither onto the dance floor. Band leaders Peter Lavenson and John McGah – yep, we got ‘em both! ― serve up rock vocals that will make your heart and your feet take wing. Don’t miss Cover Me, (Land From) Down Under, More Today Than Yesterday, and Good Lovin ⇨ La Bamba ⇨ Twist and Shout!
