Embedded within the roots are symbols of sacrifice, identity, and legacy (an American flag, military artifacts, ink, letters, and the seal of Wayland) representing both personal and collective history. The tree itself serves as a witness to time, holding stories of courage, service, and community. The unfinished and less detailed areas of the piece intentionally reflect the reality of the present moment. While the work began as a study of history and remembrance, it also became a reflection of modern life. The Sudbury Companies of Militia \u0026amp; Minute honor this history with a march through Wayland on Patriots Day, starting at the First Parish Church. On April 19, 1775, during the Battles of Lexington and Concord, alarm riders spread the news across the region. Men from Wayland joined others from neighboring towns, marching toward Concord to confront British forces. Even if not all arrived in time for the first shots, they contributed to the growing militia force that harassed British troops during their retreat to Boston. Today, Wayland’s Minutemen represent the idea of ordinary citizens stepping into extraordinary roles. It faces west toward its larger counterpart in New York, which France gifted to the United States in 1886 to mark the American centennial and celebrate their shared democratic ideals. It is in this tradition that I pursue my painting practice. I am a visual storyteller. More recently, I have focused on compositions with multiple human figures, in varying circumstances and configurations, to explore allegorical themes of gender roles, alienation and belonging, the political divide, and cultural differences and also to tell stories of friends, family, and strangers. My work draws on the language of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century painting, built through traditional oil techniques of that time. Each picture is constructed in layers: gesso, imprimatura, design, grisaille, and opaque, followed by multiple glazes using methods such as sfumato or chiaroscuro, and finished with fine details and impasto. The surface is then carefully coated with protective varnish and placed in a thoughtfully chosen frame. I don’t use these methods out of nostalgia; I use them to bring depth, quiet reverence, and a sense of lasting presence to the moments we live in today. The small scale is intentional. It asks you to come closer, to step away from spectacle, and to linger. I want you not just to see the work, but to feel it, to let it unfold before you. By bringing historical craft into contemporary subjects, I hope to bridge centuries, reminding us that painting is not just an image — it’s an encounter. Eden London, a Revolutionary War veteran from near Fitchburg, fought at Bunker Hill, wintered at Valley Forge, and was discharged in 1779 still enslaved.
